We are thrilled to announce that Kirieth-Grace Phillips Johnston has been awarded the Glenn Espino Scholarship for 2024. This scholarship, presented by GDC Caring, holds special significance as it honors the memory of Lannette Espino's late husband and is exclusively offered to family members of past or present GDCers. Lannette has been a long-time employee of GDC Marketing & Ideation.
A Name of Significance
Kirieth-Grace, whose name holds deep roots in Hebrew meaning "City of Grace," embodies the very essence of her name through her actions and aspirations. Raised by single mother and GDCer Ana-María Phillips, she learned early on the value of strength, courage, and faith in navigating life's challenges. Kirieth-Grace says her mother's guidance has instilled in her a steadfast commitment to spreading kindness in every interaction. This extends on stage in the way she carries herself as an accomplished and competition-winning singer.
Heart for Service
Having roots in Guatemala and experiencing firsthand the socio-economic disparities during her visits, Kirieth-Grace developed a profound empathy for those in need. Her journey of service began with animal fostering, where she and her mother have so far rescued and nurtured over 100 animals, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to protecting the defenseless.
A Bright Future Ahead
Driven by her passion for service and guided by her faith, Kirieth-Grace has set her sights on a career as a physician assistant. Her vision encompasses serving underdeveloped communities afflicted by illness and malnutrition, reflecting her commitment to alleviating suffering on a global scale. With plans to pursue a Bachelor's degree in biology or health sciences followed by a Master's degree, she aims to equip herself with the necessary skills and knowledge to make a tangible impact.
Kirieth-Grace's remarkable attributes extend beyond her academic excellence, the latter of which is evidenced by her 4.0 GPA at Alamo Heights High School. Her leadership skills, resilience in the face of adversity, and unwavering faith set her apart as a deserving recipient of the Glenn Espino Scholarship.
Once a GDCer, Always a GDCer
Receiving the Glenn Espino Scholarship not only signifies financial assistance but also serves as a testament to the unwavering support of GDC. We like to say “Once a GDCer, always a GDCer” and perhaps no family shows that more: long before she dreamed of being a physician assistant, Kirieth-Grace was a graduate of the former GDC daycare and her mother has been a proud GDCer since first arriving in 2004.
In honoring Kirieth-Grace Phillips Johnston as the recipient of the 2024 Glenn Espino Scholarship, we celebrate her achievements and her unwavering commitment to making a positive difference in the world. Congratulations, Kirieth-Grace, may your future be filled with continued success, growth, and boundless opportunities to spread grace and kindness wherever you go.
