A Vote for Hope: Supporting Catholic Education
Approximately 7,000 children are in need of tuition assistance in San Antonio to attend the Catholic school of their choice. It is here that Hope for the Future enters the picture. Through fundraising and corporate and community partnerships, Hope for the Future helps students achieve a faith-filled and academically rigorous education at one of San Antonio’s Catholic schools. since its inception in December 2006, Hope for the Future has awarded more than $10 million in tuition assistance to 9,800 students. However, many more students remain on a waiting list for assistance.
In seeking to grow its fundraising efforts and expand its donor base to assist these children, Hope for the Future created a unique opportunity to involve the community in its largest fundraising event – the Khaki & Plaid Gala. In 2015, five women and five men within the Archdiocese of San Antonio were nominated and given the opportunity to win votes, raise money for Catholic schools and be crowned King or Queen at the Khaki & Plaid Gala. Thanks to their efforts, the 2015 Khaki & Plaid Gala raised $695,000 for Catholic school education in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, meaning 600 children could attend Catholic school.
GDC’s BJ Stewart is an active supporter of Hope for the Future – both professionally and personally. To help the organization raise its profile in the community, BJ took on the challenge of a logo refresh for Hope for the Future. In his personal life, BJ supports the organization by donating his time and talent to create and donate paintings to be auctioned off at the annual Khaki & Plaid Gala to help raise funds.
“The paintings allow me to donate something beyond my means to make a bigger difference in our Archdiocese. My parents worked hard to provide my younger brother and I a Catholic School education, and I firmly believe that is something everyone should have access to.” –BJ Stewart
In recognition of his many contributions to support Catholic education in the community, Hope for the Future nominated BJ to stand on the 2016 Homecoming Court. A new challenge he readily accepted, and one in which finds GDC wholeheartedly supporting BJ on his quest to be named King of the 2016 Khaki & Plaid Gala on Saturday, January 23, 2016.
